… little bit of this, little bit of that, a whole lotta about the kids

Category Archives: Brain Dump

No bento today.  I woke up slowly to a gray day and couldn’t get myself up until the waking of kids compelled me to.

Not much on the agenda for today.  I did pick up some art literacy forms from the school that I want to re-do.  The person that has been running it is done this year, and, to be honest, isn’t exactly known for her organizational skills.  I’m hoping that her assistant chair person will be staying on to teach the volunteers, but I’m planning on being a bit more involved in the back end.  The materials are a mess.  The information in the bins for each artist refer to sets of slides and specific examples that we don’t have.  In fact, from what I can tell, the school doesn’t have reproductions for most of the artists at all.  I’m planning on looking into that and the budget available and hopefully can rectify that a little each year until all 36 bins have what the parent volunteers need to actually introduce the artists to the kids without borrowing library books or picking up thier own materials (which is what I did most of the time).  Somewhere there has to be organizational information that I need to track down as well.  There’s a six year revolving curriculum — someone must know which artists are grouped together each year and thier order.  I’d like to get a jump on next year’s set.  Guess I’ll send out another batch of emails.

Today is also my birthday.  40 years.  When did I get so old?!

Here comes summer!  Who is ready?!

First, choose a container that suits the personality of the person who will be using the kit. It might be a traditional basket, since there are pie baskets made by hand to carry around pie and other foods, a large canvass bag, or even a small backpack.

Next, use the list below as a guideline for what to keep in your kit. Maybe you won’t need all of the items, but these are good essentials to have on hand so you’ll always be prepared for spur of the moment picnics.

A blanket or sheet to spread the whole thing out on, should you need or want to sit on the ground

Utensils — forks, knives, spoons, plates

Cloth Napkins

Corkscrew (if serving wine) and can opener, or better yet, multi-tooled Swiss Army knife.

Cutting boards for slicing or assembling foods

Sharp knife

Anti-bacterial gel to clean hands before handling food is also useful

Non-perishable foods — dried fruit, peanut butter, crackers, nuts, etc.

Beverages – bottled water, juice boxes, etc.

Salt and pepper, either small shakers or disposable packets.

Basic condiments – ketchup, mustard, relish – collect extra packets from trips to fast food restaurants or look in the grocery store for small non-glass containers of your favorite condiments and sauces.

Flashlight

If you like to grill, you’ll also need a lighter or matches, charcoal, lighter fluid, and grilling utensils

A large trash bag to clean up the mess later.

A small plastic bag containing sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, band-aids, wet naps and a bandana.

If you bring your dog along, don’t forget a bowl, water, and food for the pooch.

Options:  You might also want to pack some fun extras, depending on the amount of room in your container:

CD Player

Single use camera

Inflatable beach ball

Frisbee

Small bottle of bubble mix

Deck of cards, crossword puzzle book, etc.

Only 2 bento so far this week; I ended up sending a laptop lunchbox instead one day because his lunchbox got left in the car and I didn’t have a chance to get it washed and ready to go in time.  Today was his pre-picked hot lunch day.  (I’ve been letting Kidlet pick up to one hot lunch a week, although he generally picks only one every other week or so.  On a morning I was rushed and late I tried to get him to do a hot lunch once and he said “No, Mom, I know how much you like making my special lunches” lol).

I wanted to do a fancy cheese design lunch for tomorrow; the last before V-Day, but I’m not sure that will come together.  Tomorrow is thier “Friendship” party, and I am volunteering for that.  I’ll be running the craft table.  They’ll be making special cards — I’m cutting card stock to size, then cutting out windows in the front and gluing down clear contact paper sheets.  They’ll be making a collage with various tissue papers, glitter, ribbons, etc, and then covering it with another sheet of contact paper to seal it. Along the same lines as the Frank Lloyd Wright window pane art that I did for the last art literacy presentation, but without the extra cardstock strips that represented the metal bits.

I’m only about half done with the prep for that.  I’m also supposed to log in to WoW tonight for a group event that takes about 3 hours.  I had told the group that I really don’t like to play on Thursday ever (it’s my one real TV night.  Even with DVR, I like to watch my shows ASAP) and normally they don’t, but there is new content to conquer so they are running extra days.

So I don’t think I will have any extra time to do anything really fancy tonight.  Mornings are self limiting — 20 minutes is the max I can take with his lunches, which isn’t enough time to do anything really complicated.

Hope everyone has a great evening!

I’m on a bento break until school resumes after the first of the year.  Kidlet wants to do hot lunch this week (although “hot” lunch days have consisted of PB and J one day and yogurt another, heh), and then its winter break.

I am not participating in the FNCCC this week.  It is Duff Goldman, the cake guy.  He’s got a few recipes from food network magazine that are a grill menu (not happening; its below freezing here) and otherwise the plan is to decorate cakes or cupcakes.

I don’t bake!

It’s stressful and not relaxing and un-fun to me.  Measurements must be too precise.  Besides, no one around here needs any sweets.

Head over to I Blame My Mother for this weeks Food Network Chef Cooking Challenge to hear what folks that DO bake did though!

New computer isn’t quite ready; I’m transitioning now.

Coming down with something, stuffy and feeling yucky.

General Tricks
Bring back a closed tab We have dedicated a section to web browsing further down below, but this one is too useful to be missed. Accidentally closed a tab? Simply press Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen the most recently closed tab and get back to what you were doing (Cmd + Shift + T on Macs), try on 25PC for more hacks and tools.

Window snapping and multiple monitor control Pressing the Windows Key + Arrow Keys will cause a window to quickly snap to each side of either monitor. Alternatively, hitting Shift + Windows Key + Arrows will cause the window to jump to the other monitor. While pressing Windows + P will allow you to quickly set up a second display or projector.

As mentioned before, in macOS we favor leveraging the power of Mission Control to handle virtual desktops, switching between apps, and peaking at your desktop beautifully. Though Macs don’t support window snapping out of the box, a $0.99 app called Magnet comes highly recommended.

Password-protect files A simple way to lock down access to certain files is to create an encrypted archive. Odds are you already have installed a copy of 7-Zip, WinRAR, or The Unarchiver (Mac) or some equivalent. Create a new archive, select to encrypt its contents and password protect them.

Between the two not much time for posting.  I have two awards to accept and pass on, thank you Sheri and Gamene!  And I will get there, honest!

I don’t shop on Black Friday.  I like shopping, but I really don’t like crowds.  It’s why I avoid malls too, unless I just can’t get what I want anywhere else.

The hubby though — he went out and braved the masses of people to do some electronics Christmas shopping.  Except that he is giving my presents to me right away and not making me wait!  I’m getting a new computer (altho not too old, this notebook is slow and has problems in some applications) and *drumroll* a new camera!  I’ll be able to stop complaining about half or more of my photos turning into dye dipped or tv snow-like messes!  Isn’t he the greatest!

thanksgiving09

This wasn’t taken with my new camera, but it’s yesterday’s Thanksgiving photo.

A while back I read Bunches and Bits idea of creating a parent-teacher conference survival basket.  I thought it was such a great idea, that I stole it for gifting our teacher (Teacher N) when our conferences finally rolled around (yesterday).

I decorated a basket with some pretty ribbon and filled it with shredded paper.  I included water, an energy drink, some fruit, a muffin, mints, citrus candies, tylenol, blistex, a stain remover pen, and added a very cute stamp (she uses them on paper for the kids all the time) from MJ’s Art Stamps for Teachers, just for fun.  [Do I have a picture of ours?  Of course not!  Grr camera!] Kidlet decorated a thankful for teacher card (since conferences lined up with Thanksgiving week it seemed appropriate) and we tucked that in as well.

Teacher N loved it!  She said that in 23 years of teaching she’d never gotten anything like that, and was so touched to get such a thoughtful gift to help her through 12 hours of conferences.  When we arrived at our conference time in the afternoon, she said that she’d been making the other teachers jealous all day, showing off her basket, LOL.

The conference itself didn’t really hold any suprises.  We all know that his behavior is something that we are all working on — he just seems younger than the other children emotionally and socially (and that’s not really shocking, given his history).  But he is improving, having fewer emotional melt-downs, etc.

As we (immodestly) know, Kidlet is very bright and Teacher N had nothing but good things to say about him academically.   It’s not just that he knows things that are well ahead in grade level (ie, reading, math, etc), but the way that he looks at the world. He is constantly seeing things that tie into whatever the class is doing and the things that he knows (finding “wall words” in the community, pointing out that such and such is a noun, or a solid, etc –  that kind of thing).  He is so enthusiastic, he apparently has some of the other kids (including a couple of the slower ones) doing the same thing.   She would like to have Kidlet enter TAG, but thinks we should wait a little bit to give him more time to work on his behavior and emotions.

We are probably going to have an occupational therapist look at Kidlet, mainly because of the writing situation I posted about the other day.  There just seems to be a disconnect between what he knows to do and what his hand does.  I had read enough on the internet to wonder if he might have some kind of sensory processing disorder.  Mom and DH and a SiL thought I was just making the symptoms fit the disorder, but without any mention of it by me, Teacher N brought the subject up.  So we’ll see what comes of that.

As you might have noticed, I did NOT get my menu plan done this week (yet?).  I shopped for lunch stuff for kidlet, and that’s about it.

All I know for sure is that Monday or Tuesday I will be making Roasted Carrot and Parsnips for the FNCCC.  I wanted to do a beef recipe to use up some of the meat in the big freezer, but his beef selections (either on food network or on his UK show) were very limited — mostly to whole roasts / tenderloins.  So carrot and parsnips it is.

We got to open ended art a little late this week.

I put out a bag of feathers, air drying clay, clay tools, and wiggly eyes.   First he said “With feathers I can make Kevin!” (from the movie “Up”) but that quickly became generic feathered friends once he realized how hard Kevin would be 😉

He made balls with the clay, shaped them with the tools, stuck them full of feathers and stuck on googly eyes.

He kept working on them until he ran out of clay.  I guess it’s a good thing that I only pulled out a handful or so instead of letting him use all the clay in the bucket!
