… little bit of this, little bit of that, a whole lotta about the kids

Dr. Seuss’s characters are deceptively simple.  They just don’t look right without the black line drawing overlayed on the food.  I tried the Lorax, truffula trees, a Sneetch, and a fish from McGilligot’s Pool — just didn’t work.  So in the end we went with the classic icons (even though the eggs look more blue than green in my photo)

PB and J, cheese and fruit roll up Cat in the Hat hat, mixed berries, “green” eggs and a ham flower.  I also packaged a strawberry drink in a water bottle and labeled it “The Yink’s Pink Ink”.

Baby L is either in serious teething throes, or getting sick.  Her runny nose, whininess and refusal to spend even 2 minutes separated from a parent makes it tough to get anything done.  Still, with Daddy’s help I managed to pull together a bit of bento for today.

PB, Jam and whipped cream cheese (flavored and colored with a little of the jam juices) on whole wheat, apples cut in the shape of well, apples ;), blueberries, carrot flowers, pea skewers, and cheese raccoon with spinach accents (and a little bit of lunchmeat for the cheeks) all in my current favorite box (Very Hungry Caterillar).

Time taken:  I made the raccoon ahead, took about 10 minutes, so in total probably about 20 minutes.

A week full of super quick bento ended with this uninspiring box of PB and J, bosc pear, quail egg, cheese, carrot and broccoli.

Oops, I forgot to resize this photo.  If you click on it, it’ll take forever to load, sorry ;)  This bento was supposed to be for the “100 day” celebration at school, but instead just became a generic, quick bento.

kindergarten bento 74

Circle sandwich, blueberries and strawberries, broccoli, peas and carrot (under), quail egg and cheese flower accents.

kindergarten bento 72

Pepperoni and cheese snail on a PB & J Uncrustable, mango flowers and blueberries.  He asked for no veggies today, so I let it slide since he normally eats his veggies very well, although I had some broccoli and carrot I was going to tuck around the left.

Originally I was planning the snail on whole wheat, so I thought the provolone would be fine, but when I ended up using the “circle sandwich” (again on request), it fades in a bit — wish it was out of cheddar!  Ah well =)

Time taken: 15 minutes

I wish I had a way to get a really nice thin smile like you see in the Japanese lunches (out of nori).  His fat smile changed his personality, but I guess he is still cute 😉

kindergarten bento 71

PB & J, cheese and meat mushroom, mini muffins, blueberries, carrot.

No school Monday, hot lunch Tuesday, no school yesterday because he had an IQ testing thing for several hours, so first bento this week.

kindergarten bento 70

Turkey and cheese critter on whole wheat, dragon fruit and blueberries, broccoli, tomato and baby carrot.
