The Letter Y is an unreliable letter that acts as both a consonant and a vowel.\u00c2\u00a0 It makes a wide range of sounds including \/y\/ \/e\/ and \/i\/.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Present a capital and lower case Y to your child.\u00c2\u00a0 See if she knows the name of the letter and the sound it makes. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Explain that it makes very different sounds from its name.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Give examples of Y words, such as yawn, yellow and yes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Read <\/span>Yertle the Turtle<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Go on a scavenger hunt around the house to find Y words for the Y bag this week.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Look for yarn, yogurt, yam, yield sign, yo-yo, yak, yeast, yardstick, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Create a Y collage.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Have your child search through magazines for words that begin with Y to cut out and glue to paper for his alphabet book.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Yarn Covered Y\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Provide a Y cut from yellow construction paper and small pieces of yarn.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Have your child glue the yarn to the Y.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Encourage her to completely cover the letter. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>When dry, glue to 8\u00c2\u00bd x 11\u00e2\u20ac\u009d paper and place in alphabet book.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

6. Provide a worksheet with a line of Ys to trace across the top and a blank spot below, a 6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d square of black paper, different kinds of yellow paper (construction, patterned, textures, cellophane, etc), glue stick and markers.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Have your child glue the black square to the paper, and then cut out the yellow paper into different shapes.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Glue the shapes to the black square to make their yellow collage.<\/span><\/p>\n

7.
