{"id":1938,"date":"2007-01-10T13:54:17","date_gmt":"2007-01-10T20:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/mom\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2009-11-28T18:19:17","modified_gmt":"2009-11-29T01:19:17","slug":"learn-the-alphabet-b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/mom\/?p=1938","title":{"rendered":"Learn the Alphabet &#8211; B"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The letter B is a dependable letter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It usually makes the &#8220;buh&#8221; sound as in bat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">However, it is sometimes silent (as in doubt or lamb).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The rule for remembering this is that when b comes BEFORE T or AFTER M in the same syllable, it is silent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This is too advanced for kindergarten students just learning to associate the sounds with the letters.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore, until the children have mastered the &#8220;typical&#8221; letter b sound, try to stay away from using words such as doubt or lamb when teaching the letter b.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. Present a capitol and lower case B to your child.\u00c2\u00a0 See if he knows the name of the letter or the sound that it makes. Give examples of words, such as ball, balloon, bubbles, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 Try blowing pretend bubbles whie making the B-B-B-B-B sound.\u00c2\u00a0 Encourage your child to come up with other words that start with B.<\/p>\n<p>2. Read <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Drawing-Lessons-Bear-David-McPhail\/dp\/0316563455\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1258405019&amp;sr=1-1\">Drawing Lessons from a Bear<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>3. Create a B Bag with items around the house such as bear, balls, balloon, block, banana, bread, book, bubbles, buttons, beans, etc<\/p>\n<p>4. Create a B Collage, search through magazines for words that start with the letter &#8220;B&#8221; and glue them down.<\/p>\n<p>5. Provide a large cutout &#8220;B&#8221;, taped to a sheet of waxed paper for easier cleanup.\u00c2\u00a0 Select 2 or 3 paint colors and place a small amount\u00c2\u00a0on a\u00c2\u00a0shallow paper plate.\u00c2\u00a0 Quarter sized dollops that are close together will allow them to mix while being applied.\u00c2\u00a0 Provide an inflated balloon to your child and encourage him to bounce the balloon in a color, and then onto the &#8220;B&#8221; shape to make balloon prints.\u00c2\u00a0 Once the balloon print dries, glue it to a sheet of paper for thier alphabet book.<\/p>\n<p>6. Provide a worksheet with B&#8217;s for tracing across the top and a blank space below.\u00c2\u00a0 Cut out balloon shapes from construction paper and give that and some small pieces of string to your child.\u00c2\u00a0 They can glue the balloon shapes and string to the page to make balloons.\u00c2\u00a0 If you like, they can prepare the background before gluing, coloring the sky, adding clouds, etc.<\/p>\n<p>7.
