{"id":1630,"date":"2009-11-04T11:31:28","date_gmt":"2009-11-04T18:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/mom\/?p=1630"},"modified":"2009-11-25T19:34:12","modified_gmt":"2009-11-26T02:34:12","slug":"open-ended-art-matisse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/mom\/?p=1630","title":{"rendered":"Open Ended Art: Matisse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weeks open ended art project theme is &#8220;Matisse&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a new thing; Open Ended Art will feature a specific artist once a month.\u00c2\u00a0 We read &#8220;When Pig-Asso met Moo-Tisse&#8221; and &#8220;Drawing with Scissors&#8221; as well as checking out some Matisse art on the internet to get familiar with his work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0021.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"002\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0021-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"002\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>^^ THIS is how almost all of my progress shots came out this week.\u00c2\u00a0 Yay?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/005.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"005\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/005-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"005\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get started, and show him a bit about the collage work, I first cut a bunch of &#8220;matisse inspired&#8221; shapes and let him do a collage with those.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/007.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"007\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/007.JPG\" alt=\"007\" width=\"347\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I realize that I am biased, but didn&#8217;t he do an amazing job?\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t cut the pieces with any kind of picture in mind at all.\u00c2\u00a0 And here we have &#8220;Mommy Watches Two Baby Birds&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 I really love how this one came out.<\/p>\n<p>After that, I handed over paper and scissors and asked him to make his own shapes for another collage work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"010\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0103-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"010\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0031.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"003\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0031-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"003\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This\u00c2\u00a0are the *only* process shot that isn&#8217;t all screwed up, and you can&#8217;t see very much.\u00c2\u00a0 Sigh!\u00c2\u00a0 He cut a lot of long wavy strips, glued several together in bunches, and then attached the mini-collages to the paper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/013.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"013\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/013.JPG\" alt=\"013\" width=\"378\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0103.JPG\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"FONT-WEIGHT: bold\">I loved this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I started by telling her we were going to study <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">Matisse<\/span>, an artist, and that she was going to get to see his pictures on the computer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I told her how he used to paint, but got sick and was confined to his bed. Since he couldn&#8217;t paint, <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">he used his scissors<\/span> to cut out his pictures.<br \/>\nI told her that Matisse liked <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">bright, contrasting colors<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I then showed her a <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">color wheel<\/span> online and explained that colors opposite on the wheel are called contrasting or complimentary colors.<br \/>\nWe looked at the various pairs of colors she could choose<br \/>\nand<span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\"> she chose violet and yellow<\/span>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_6690VNY9Tt4\/SvDm5GrFsNI\/AAAAAAAAE7o\/lZKNyZrEq1U\/s1600-h\/27+-+Nov+2-3.jpg\" onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\"><\/a>We moved to her art table and I started cutting<span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsconnected.org\/toolkit\/encyc_shapegeorganic.html\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">organic shapes <\/span><\/a><br \/>\nfor her, explaining that Matisse used lots of organic shapes in his collages and that organic meant that the shapes had lots of curves and few, if any, straight lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Then I cut some negative shapes and I explained about <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\"><br \/>\nnegative and positive shapes<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bear busied herself glueing the pieces where she wanted on her yellow paper.<br \/>\nShe made one piece <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">overlap<\/span>, so we talked about what that word meant too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She enjoyed the process so much that she wanted to do another.<br \/>\nWe went back to the color wheel and this time she chose blue and orange as her complimentary colors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This time, Bear became Matisse and cut some of her own shapes.<br \/>\nAs she cut mostly rectangular pieces, I cut some organic shapes for her and I mentioned that now she would have contrast of shapes too &#8211; rectangular ones and organic ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Why this was a<span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%; FONT-WEIGHT: bold\"> great<\/span> project:<br \/>\nIt was a fantastic <span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 180%\">vocabulary lesson<\/span>.<br \/>\nBear was able to tell me that a circle wasn&#8217;t organic and neither was a square.<br \/>\nShe could point out the negative shapes and tell me they were the empty ones.
