From birth to 12 months<\/strong>, your child may:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>make eye contact and smile <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>babble and coo to communicate comfort or happiness <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>move arms and legs to express joy, excitement, or anger <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>repeat babbles, such as “da da,” or “ma ma” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>by 8 to 12 months: understand directions, such as putting a hat on his head when told to do so; say his first words<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From 1 to 2 years<\/strong>, your child may:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>use sounds and utterances with adult intonation <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>begin to combine words <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>engage in telegraphic speech \u00e2\u20ac\u201d one- or two-word combinations, such as “Daddy come,” “I fall,” or “All gone”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From 3 to 4 years<\/strong>, your child may:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>speak in nearly complete sentences <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>use pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, articles, and possessives <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>play with language, making up words and rhymes or repeating chants: “Nicey, dicey, all insidey, apple pie!” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>ask many why<\/em> questions, as well as how<\/em> and when<\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>tell a simple story, but not in sequence <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>take turns in conversations, but still interrupt to talk about himself<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From 5 to 6 years<\/strong>, your child may:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>continue to expand her vocabulary to about 5,000 to 8,000 words <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>articulate his thoughts with adultlike speech <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>be aware that a word can have more than one meaning <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>begin to use language to control situations <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>often misunderstand words and use them in a humorous way <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00b7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>carry on conversations with others, yet still want to dominate<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
