{"id":204,"date":"2016-10-18T22:59:18","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T05:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/journal\/?p=204"},"modified":"2016-10-19T23:44:07","modified_gmt":"2016-10-20T06:44:07","slug":"practical-provident-works-for-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/journal\/?p=204","title":{"rendered":"Practical &#038; Provident &#8212; Works for Me!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-213\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1pp-340x1024.png\" alt=\"1pp\" width=\"192\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1pp-340x1024.png 340w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1pp.png 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/>Before I spend money on any books, I tend to get them from\u00c2\u00a0 Kindle Unlimited or from the library, if they are available.\u00c2\u00a0 My latest read from the library is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Practical Prepper<\/span> by Kylene &amp; Jonathan Jones.\u00c2\u00a0 Interestingly, it seems to have been re-named; as far as I can tell, its the same book, with the same release date, not an updated version, but on Amazon, it is only available as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Provident-Prepper-Common-Sense-Preparing-Emergencies\/dp\/1462113826\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1476943177&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=provident+prepper\">The Provident Prepper<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I suspect it is because the &#8220;experts&#8221; on Doomsday Preppers were referred to as &#8220;Our experts at\u00c2\u00a0Practical Preppers&#8230;&#8221; and Kylene &amp; Jonathan didn&#8217;t want to be confused with them.\u00c2\u00a0 (Or maybe they WERE the experts and didn&#8217;t want to be\u00c2\u00a0known as them.\u00c2\u00a0;)) But that&#8217;s just a guess.<\/p>\n<p>I have only read the first few chapters, but as I went through chapter 2 &#8220;What are the Odds?&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0(much of which you can see on amazon with the &#8220;Look Inside&#8221; link), I wondered if this risk assessment information might appeal to my skeptical husband.<\/p>\n<p>It provides 24 emergency scenarios, ranging from house fire, earthquake, tornados, through more unlikely disasters, such as EMP, Pandemic, and so on.\u00c2\u00a0 Each is briefly defined, may include observations about what makes it more or less likely, and offers some methods to prepare specifically for that event.<\/p>\n<p>What I thought might appeal to my husband is the rating system.\u00c2\u00a0 It lays out the 24 scenarios in a chart and asks you to rate the probability of that event occurring in your location (In socal, you&#8217;re going to rate earthquake or drought a lot higher than extreme winter storms, for example) from 1 (no chance) to 5 (will definitely occur at some point).\u00c2\u00a0 Then you rate the significance of those events from 1 (no consequence or inconvenience) to 5 (catastrophic injury, etc.)\u00c2\u00a0 [each number is given a fairly specific set of circumstances to make it easier to choose.]\u00c2\u00a0 Then you multiply the two numbers together to get a Risk Number between 1 and 25.\u00c2\u00a0 The higher the number, the more likely and detrimental the scenario, the more emphasis you should put on preparing for that possibility.<\/p>\n<p>While the rating is subjective, the mathematical nature of this risk assessment may well appeal to my husband&#8217;s rational and logical mind.\u00c2\u00a0 That isn&#8217;t to say that I am not rational and logical!\u00c2\u00a0 No matter what he says! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>The Hazards listed (again, you can see these and the chart in the Look Inside link, AND I am linking you TO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Provident-Prepper-Common-Sense-Preparing-Emergencies\/dp\/1462113826\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\">the book<\/a> AND their <a href=\"http:\/\/theprovidentprepper.org\/\">web site<\/a>, so I hope I am OK posting this.<\/p>\n<p>Drought<br \/>\nEarthquake<br \/>\nExtreme Winter Storms<br \/>\nFlooding<br \/>\nHeat Wave<br \/>\nHurricane, Tropical Storm, Typhoon<br \/>\nLandslide, Mudslide, Debris Flow<br \/>\nTornado<br \/>\nTsunami<br \/>\nWildfire<br \/>\nPandemic, Epidemic<br \/>\nBiological Attack<br \/>\nChemical Attack<br \/>\nHazmat Incident<br \/>\nEMP<br \/>\nSolar Flare<br \/>\nNuclear Accident<br \/>\nNuclear Attack<br \/>\nTerrorist Attack<br \/>\nCivil Unrest \/ Breakdown of Social Order<br \/>\nEconomic Collapse<br \/>\nHouse Fire<br \/>\nPersonal Disaster<br \/>\nSocietal Collapse \/ Breakdown of Civilization<br \/>\nOther<\/p>\n<p>I might include volcanic eruption on my personal list.
