{"id":518,"date":"2009-09-26T07:45:57","date_gmt":"2009-09-26T14:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=518"},"modified":"2009-09-25T15:55:05","modified_gmt":"2009-09-25T22:55:05","slug":"what-have-i-gotten-myself-into","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=518","title":{"rendered":"What have I gotten myself into?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So bento-ing and my attempts to be involved at the school may have gotten me into trouble!\u00c2\u00a0 Each year, the schools foundation holds an auction to raise money to help keep positions in the school that the state isn&#8217;t able to maintain anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 Although a public school, the neighborhood is fairly affluent (we&#8217;re kind of the oddball family here; we couldn&#8217;t normally afford where we live, long story), and has very involved parents.\u00c2\u00a0 Apparently they raise a fair bit of money.\u00c2\u00a0 Even after the cut that is required to go to the state to help less-well community supported schools,\u00c2\u00a0the auction money\u00c2\u00a0pays for the PE teacher (can you beleive that many portland public schools just have NO PE at all?\u00c2\u00a0 I was shocked!) and for the music teacher and part of another normal staffing position, as well as some other stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 They do so well that the school has been able to eliminate all the cheesy wrapping paper and greeting card type sales.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, one of the things they sell at auction are classroom art projects.\u00c2\u00a0 These aren&#8217;t your garden variety projects Kindergarten fingerprints turned into bugs on a\u00c2\u00a0terra cotta pot. \u00c2\u00a0For instance, last year a kindergarten class covered a donated birdbath with\u00c2\u00a0ceramic tiles, that they had mosaic&#8217;d in patterns in smaller broken tiles.\u00c2\u00a0 Apparently it sold very well.\u00c2\u00a0 The various classroom projects go for several hundred to several thousand dollars.
