{"id":34,"date":"2008-10-01T18:58:16","date_gmt":"2008-10-02T01:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=34"},"modified":"2008-10-02T14:29:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-02T21:29:00","slug":"those-apples-are-for-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=34","title":{"rendered":"Those apples are for what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bento is a relatively new interest of mine.\u00c2\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">While the Japanese term &#8220;bento&#8221; roughly translates to &#8220;box lunch&#8221; in English, and I guess even a happy meal would qualify, a typical traditional Japanese Bento is not an average packed lunch.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s really a craft, an art.\u00c2\u00a0 The goal with bento is to assemble a meal that is just as appealing to the eyes as it is to the taste buds.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s ruled first by the concept of <em>Goshiki<\/em> (five colors) which calls for the cook to include at least one item from each color group (Red or Orange, White, Black or Purple or Brown, Yellow and Green).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Food is divided proportionally, 3 parts rice to 2 parts fruit and\/or vegetables to 1 part protein.\u00c2\u00a0 Bento boxes are packed tightly, wedging the food into place so it maintains its visual appeal until lunchtime.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/example31.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-37\" title=\"Hello Kitty\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/example31-288x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/example31-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/example31.jpg 769w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Beyond that, they can get pretty crazy.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not uncommon for Japanese mothers to prepare an elaborate, playfully and creatively decorated boxed lunch to entice their children to eat all of their food when they&#8217;re at school.
