{"id":1531,"date":"2010-08-28T11:33:13","date_gmt":"2010-08-28T18:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=1531"},"modified":"2010-08-28T11:49:16","modified_gmt":"2010-08-28T18:49:16","slug":"tot-school-823-292010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=1531","title":{"rendered":"Tot School 8\/23 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 28\/2010 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This week we turned to farm and farm animals for inspiration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Baby L is\u00c2\u00a015 months<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1plus1plus1equals1.com\/TotSchool.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i131.photobucket.com\/albums\/p316\/carisahinson\/Tot-School.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Tot School\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I still haven&#8217;t found any nice trays, so I continue to use some inexpensive plastic baskets that I found at Targets Dollar Spot as my &#8220;tot trays&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Tot Basket:\u00c2\u00a0 Farm Animals &amp; Barn.\u00c2\u00a0 I dug out a bunch of farm animals from our animal bin and added those to the basket along with an old fisher price little people barn (it still moos! =))<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool101.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1576\" title=\"totschool10\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool101.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool101.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool101-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I followed her lead in playing for a bit, narrating what we were doing and what animals we were using.\u00c2\u00a0 I showed her how to sort our animals into families (since we have several cows, pigs, etc) and encouraged her to find specific animals from the basket to join the family we were building.\u00c2\u00a0 She consistantly got the cow, but none of the other animals.<\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: animal names, family, animal sounds, barn, sort<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Tot Basket: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Alex-Toys-Stack-Stacking-Little\/dp\/B001U0NLIM\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=toys-and-games&amp;qid=1282270878&amp;sr=1-1\">Mix and Stack Farm<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool71.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1567\" title=\"totschool7\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool71.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool71.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool71-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was a good activity for Baby L this week.\u00c2\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t quite get that first you put on the legs and then the body of the animals with 2 parts, but getting them threaded on was challenging, but doable.\u00c2\u00a0 We have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Plan-Toy-Geometric-Sorting-Board\/dp\/B00000ITOY\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=toys-and-games&amp;qid=1282776411&amp;sr=8-2\">plan toys geometric sorter stacker thingie <\/a>and the multiple posts per shape is too hard for her at 14 months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool81.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1568\" title=\"totschool8\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool81.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool81.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool81-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: barn, cow, pig, cat, chicken, duck, stack, hole, peg<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Zoo Trip.\u00c2\u00a0 We went to the zoo with all the cousins on Friday last week, and just\u00c2\u00a0did a quick run through the farm area.\u00c2\u00a0 We went back this week, just me and the kids so I could get Baby L out of the stroller and into the petting pen.\u00c2\u00a0 She got to\u00c2\u00a0run around a bit in the goat pen and stroke thier fur then\u00c2\u00a0she\u00c2\u00a0pet a chicken and bunny.\u00c2\u00a0 No pics of that because I didn&#8217;t have enough arms to help her pet them appropriately while holding her and work the camera as well. ;)\u00c2\u00a0 I remember the first time we took Kidlet there when he was about the same age; have a velcro closure to open and sort the soft stuffed animals inside.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;1&#8221; is a little nest for the chicken.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool23.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1563\" title=\"totschool2\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool23.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool23-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Baby L enjoyed this toy a lot.\u00c2\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t really sort well, but she enjoyed the stacking and the make believe barnyard play with animal noises courtesy of mama.\u00c2\u00a0 I suspect that we will be seeing this toy\u00c2\u00a0several times in the future; \u00c2\u00a0Dot Stickers with Cow Template<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool33.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1564\" title=\"totschool3\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool33.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool33.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool33-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Baby L really likes lift the flap type books, but is still too rough on them so I don&#8217;t have them out yet, aside from a few we had left from when kidlet was little that are already in not so great shape.\u00c2\u00a0 So I thought we&#8217;d make our own lift the flap picture.\u00c2\u00a0 I took green mulberry paper and glued it on cardstock to make a field, and then printed out a barn.\u00c2\u00a0 I cut it out, leaving a little on the sides to make the tab to glue it down, and then cut it down the middle so it could be opened up.\u00c2\u00a0 I helped her get stickers off the sheet and encouraged her to stick them to the paper (tapping it with my finger and verbally) and she did all the sticking herself.\u00c2\u00a0 She enjoyed the stickers a lot, and kept asking for more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool62.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1566\" title=\"totschool6\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool62.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool62.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool62-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The finished picture.\u00c2\u00a0 She has played with it since, opening and closing the flaps as well as pulling off\u00c2\u00a0and trying to re-sticker with the stickers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool43.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1570\" title=\"totschool4\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool43.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool43.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool43-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had planned to add spots to the cow with a dot-a-dot marker, but after trying out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Crayola-Washable-First-Marks-Green\/dp\/B000QUIHT0\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=toys-and-games&amp;qid=1282777441&amp;sr=8-3\">Crayola Tadoodles<\/a> first markers which are very dot-a-dot like, only shorter, rounder and made even\u00c2\u00a0more for toddler hands, and having her eat them, smear them everywhere (looked like she had a black eye!), and mostly making lines rather than dots, I switched to circle stickers from my desk drawer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool52.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1565\" title=\"totschool5\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool52.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool52.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool52-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: animal names, animal sounds, open, closed, lift, circle, spot<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Felt Board: Little Red Hen<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool112.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1577\" title=\"totschool11\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool112.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool112-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kidlet read this book to us earlier in the day, then Baby L and I played with the felt board (I had\u00c2\u00a0purchased\u00c2\u00a0this\u00c2\u00a0felt story\u00c2\u00a0several years ago) and I re-told the story in very abbreviated form.\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;d giggle every time I said &#8220;NOT I!&#8221; in silly voices for each character.\u00c2\u00a0 We talked about what was in each picture, and mama made animal sounds.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: Hen, Cat, Pig, Goose, Chicks, Wheat, Bread, Grind, Eat, Bake<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Animal Matching Game from <a href=\"http:\/\/asinglegypsy.blogspot.com\/\">Creative Learning Fun&#8217;s <\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/creativelearningfun\">Etsy Store<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The pack is definitely geared more for preschool, but I thought the little countrified animals were so cute when I saw them on her blog that I thought I would run them through the xyron and make stickers; I would always have the .pdf for a farm unit later on when the actual activities were more age appropriate.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 While I *could* have made the activity pages, found free clip art, etc, the time I would have spent is well worth the measely 5$ that I paid for it.\u00c2\u00a0 Plus this way the clip art is all the same style, and just plain cute! =)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool131.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1584\" title=\"totschool13\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool131.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool131-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I ended up printing out the animal matching game &#8212; well, PART of it.\u00c2\u00a0 I picked the cow, chicken and pig.\u00c2\u00a0 That would be plenty for her age and they were\u00c2\u00a0very different\u00c2\u00a0in colors (I figured she would easily confuse the sheep and cow for instance).\u00c2\u00a0 I used clear contact paper to make them a little more sturdy, then cut them so they would line up cleanly without contact paper hanging over the matching up edges.<\/p>\n<p>Let me say that I had no expectation that Baby L would be able to make them line up.\u00c2\u00a0 I put the three faces in a row and then mixed up the bodies and legs.\u00c2\u00a0 She DID pick up the bodies\u00c2\u00a0 and legs and get them put on the right pile though (most of the tiem).\u00c2\u00a0 Also exciting &#8212; I would tap the pig or chicken and ask her what it was, and she didn&#8217;t have anything to say.\u00c2\u00a0 I would tap the cow though and ask and she did say &#8220;kuh kuh kuh&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I tried this out on some of our plastic animals later and she was definitely trying to verbally identify the cow!\u00c2\u00a0 (Of course\u00c2\u00a0 someone might point out that &#8220;Kuh kuh kuh&#8221; is also how she says &#8220;car&#8221; and &#8220;cat&#8221; and &#8220;kiwi&#8221; &#8212; I say, Don&#8217;t Rain on my Parade! ;))<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d also agree that we need a little tot sized table; working at high chair isn&#8217;t much fun.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe next payday.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: cow, chicken, pig, match, head, body, legs<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Pot Band.\u00c2\u00a0 The plan was to give her a selection of kitchen pots and pans and large spoons and let her go to town.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I had planned\u00c2\u00a0to sing &#8220;Old MacDonald&#8221; and &#8220;Fiddle-i-fi&#8221; while I showed her how to bang in rhythym to the music.<\/p>\n<p>This did not happen.\u00c2\u00a0 I had a headache on the day I&#8217;d scheduled this, and just couldn&#8217;t face it.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead we used her shakers that we made a couple weeks ago.\u00c2\u00a0 We danced, shook the shakers, and sang those songs.\u00c2\u00a0 Kidlet heard us and had to come join in.\u00c2\u00a0 I guess technically with Kidlet there it wasn&#8217;t 1 on 1 and thus not &#8220;tot school&#8221;; I&#8217;m sure its no longer published.\u00c2\u00a0 We bought that and &#8220;First Words&#8221; in 2004\/5 when Kidlet wasn&#8217;t much older than Baby L is now.\u00c2\u00a0 They are board books with\u00c2\u00a0simple photographs of objects and animals, many in vibrant colors.\u00c2\u00a0 They remind me of DK publishing books (although these were done by Paradise Press).\u00c2\u00a0 Anyway, she really likes these two books and will bring them to us over and over.\u00c2\u00a0 She has recently gotten into the habit of touching each item on a page (multiple times even) so we can tell her what each object is.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes I will switch it up and ask her &#8220;where is the [whatever]?&#8221;
