{"id":1481,"date":"2010-08-22T07:39:21","date_gmt":"2010-08-22T14:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=1481"},"modified":"2010-08-22T13:49:28","modified_gmt":"2010-08-22T20:49:28","slug":"tot-school-816-8222010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=1481","title":{"rendered":"Tot School 8\/16 &#8211; 8\/22\/2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This week many of our activities were inspired by food, as I am working with her older brother on food groups and pyramid and nutrition, and I was able to adapt materials I had out and on hand for the younger audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Baby L is 14.5 months<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1plus1plus1equals1.com\/TotSchool.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i131.photobucket.com\/albums\/p316\/carisahinson\/Tot-School.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Tot School\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plush Food.\u00c2\u00a0 As I <a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=1503\">posted a few days back<\/a>, I had picked up some plush food from Ikea during our trip there a couple weeks ago specifically for this week of food-related tot school.\u00c2\u00a0 We have fruits, vegetables, and a breakfast set.\u00c2\u00a0 The blog at <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.houstonpress.com\/eating\/2010\/07\/stuffed_cotton_food_from_ikea.php\">houstonpress.com<\/a> made me laugh; I was searching for a listing of the vegetables somewhere to identify the ones that I couldn&#8217;t and it said regarding the breakfast pack:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>If you&#8217;re raising an average child, this is: <\/strong>Breakfast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;re raising a &#8220;foodie,&#8221; this is: <\/strong>Baby&#8217;s First Brunch Set. Includes hand-cut sourdough with fresh prosciutto and mozzarella, heirloom lettuce and thinly sliced vine-ripened tomato, gingerbread pancakes with fresh seasonal topping, farm-fresh free range eggs, natural cased sausage, and apple wood smoked maple bacon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool32.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1523\" title=\"totschool3\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool32.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool32.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool32-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I left the basket out\u00c2\u00a0 on a shelf within her reach for her to play with this week once we&#8217;d done our specific totschool focus on it (most of the totschool toys are NOT left out for her to use), and she brought it out many times.\u00c2\u00a0 I suspect that this was just to dump it out, spread the pieces from one side of the room to the other so that mama would crawl around on the floor finding them all to put back in the basket.<\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: Fruit, Vegetable, names of specific food, soft, squishy<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Fruit and Veggie Stick Puppets.\u00c2\u00a0 As I<a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/?p=1471\"> posted <\/a>about a bit back, I made these from painted cardstock, with just some pen accents and then glued them to popsicle sticks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_07411.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1485\" title=\"IMG_0741\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_07411.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_07411.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_07411-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We played with these as puppets with mama hiding behind a small wall of pillows and making them talk.\u00c2\u00a0 I also let her handle them and would say the name of the food as she picked one up.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, in fact a couple did get ripped and torn off the sticks.\u00c2\u00a0 That was fine, I made them for her {inexpensively}, knowing that would be a probably outcome.\u00c2\u00a0 Lastly, we read through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Food-Thought-Joost-Elffers\/dp\/0439110181\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1282100750&amp;sr=8-1\">Food For Thought<\/a>, and looked for matches with the puppets.\u00c2\u00a0 (OK, mama looked for matches and then pointed them out to her, talking all the while =))<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool22.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1522\" title=\"totschool2\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool22.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool22-300x289.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: fruit, vegetable, names of specific foods, stick, puppet<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Fruit Tasting.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0This project was\u00c2\u00a0initially designed for kidlet, who was rating them on a scale of 1 to 5, and keeping track of which ones were sweet vs. not so sweet in a kind of mini graph.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool111.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1541\" title=\"totschool11\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool111.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool111-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I included raspberries, tomato, banana, lemon, kiwi and avocado.\u00c2\u00a0 She has had all these fruits and more before tbh; we are not an apple, banana and orange family.\u00c2\u00a0 We are a buy every crazy fruit (and vegetable) we can find at asian and farmers markets kind of family.\u00c2\u00a0 ;)\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;d planned a\u00c2\u00a0trip to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwajimaya.com\/\">Uwajimaya<\/a> for a more exotic selection, but frankly its a couple days to payday and those far travelling fruits are expensive and, really, exotic wasn&#8217;t necessary for kidlet or baby L&#8217;s purpose in this activity.\u00c2\u00a0I put a few pieces of each on a plate, let her taste one of each, then encouraged her to not only sign &#8220;more&#8221; but to point to the ones she wanted to eat after tasting each of them, and to try and vocalize *something* to show what she wanted (I&#8217;d say &#8220;buh buh buh banana&#8221; and see if I could get her to at least say &#8220;buh&#8221; for example).\u00c2\u00a0 I got a buh for\u00c2\u00a0banana and a kuh for the kiwi, which was a triumph\u00c2\u00a0in my eyes because she is so\u00c2\u00a0focused on the phyiscal and has been uninterested in vocalizing at all.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1540  aligncenter\" title=\"totschool10\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool10-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool10-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool10.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">What&#8217;s this one?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool9.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1539  aligncenter\" title=\"totschool9\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool9-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool9-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/totschool9.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Oooh, So Sour!<\/p>\n<p>Vocabulary: names of fruits, sweet, juicy, sour, red, yellow, green<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Food Collage.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d planned another contact paper collage with pictures of different foods, but she was completely uninterested this week.\u00c2\u00a0 She just wanted to tear and taste the pictures, so I put this activity aside and we had extra outside time instead.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1526\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0746.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1526\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1526  \" title=\"IMG_0746\" src=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0746.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0746.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pcgirl.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0746-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hanging in Cousin P&#39;s backyard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On a side note, one reason that I&#8217;ve been including collage each week is that I have been clipping magazines, cutting out pictures from torn up about to be discarded books, and collecting stickers\u00c2\u00a0for several years, ever since Kidlet was learning his basics (we did a collage page for each letter for his alphabet book).\u00c2\u00a0 A couple months ago I finally sorted them from the random pile in a 12&#215;12 scrapbook paper box which was an absolute beast to\u00c2\u00a0manage into separate file folders stored in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.containerstore.com\/shop?productId=10027142&amp;N=&amp;Nao=16&amp;Ntt=file+folder\">portable file tote<\/a>, sorted by letter (I did letters first, once I had at least a half dozen for a letter, I&#8217;d\u00c2\u00a0sort others of that letter into a theme folder instead &#8212; (i.e. banged a stick of celery on her high chair set up in the kitchen) while kidlet made vegetable soup (using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Growing-Vegetable-Books-Young-Readers\/dp\/0152325816\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1281829956&amp;sr=8-1\">Growing Vegetable Soup<\/a> recipe, which I thought was quite bland) and then sampled that as well as the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sproutonline.com\/sprout\/recipes\/detail.aspx?id=5f9698fa-9c63-4777-b9b9-9b1100f2ea8e\">Pink Fruit Soup<\/a>&#8221;
